Washington Redskins Start John Beck Against Carolina Panthers this Sunday

Washington Redskins John Beck has been named the starting QB for Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers. Coach Mike Shanahan told his quarterbacks on Tuesday, but it wasn’t officially announced until Wednesday morning that John Beck will start Sunday on the road against the Carolina Panthers at Bank of America Stadium.

Beck took over for Rex Grossman at the end of the third quarter for the Redskin’s after Grossman struggled by completing just 9-of-22 passes for 143 yards and throwing four picks and a QB rating of 23.7.  Beck came into the game trailing a desperate Eagles team, 20-6 and completed 8-of-15 passes for 117 yards and led the offense to its only touchdown of the game, a 3-yard run on a quarterback draw.  The comeback fell short as the first place Redskins lost 20-13 and are now a half-game behind the first place Giants in the NFC East.

The decision ends a stretch of five straight starts this season for Rex Grossman, who has led the Redskins to a 3-2 record. Grossman has thrown six TD’s and five INT’s in the Redskins first four games of the season, but had four picks in Sunday’s 20-13 loss to the Eagles. Overall, Grossman has 11 turnovers – nine interceptions and two fumbles  through five games and his 66.5 overall rating ranks him 32nd of 33 quarterbacks in the league.

John Beck will be making his first start since December of ‘07, when he was a rookie with Miami. “I’m definitely excited,” Beck told reporters Redskins Park. “There has been a lot of hard work that has gone into this. You never know when your opportunity is going to come and you have to stay ready. I’ve tried to do that and I just want to go out there and do my best.”  (Redskins.com)

Could this QB change spark the Redskins offense against a 1-5 Carolina team at Bank of America Stadium or will the lack of snaps with the first team show on the field this Sunday?
