Redskins NFL Sunday Recap
Torain carries Redskins to win over Rams
St. Louis, Missouri-
In a much needed rebound after Monday night’s stunning loss to the rival Dallas, Redskins 3rd running back Ryan Torain made his 2011 season debut on Sunday and made an immediate impact in the game against the 0-3 Rams. Pounding the ball through the league’s 32nd ranked run defense, Torain may just have run himself back into the starting lineup for the Redskins. Bursting through would be tacklers on his way to a run, clearly is the “Play of the Game.”
Torain was the starting running back last season after an injury sidelined starter Clinton Portis. Torain then suffered an injury of his own with a broken left hand during the Redskins training camp this past summer. Newly acquired Tim Hightower from the Cardinals, earned his way into a starting job with rookie Roy Helu eluding his way into the number two spot going into the regular season.
Call it fresh legs or biting at the chops to get back in there, but Ryan Torain certainly made the best of his opportunity to move the ball in a much needed ground attack against the Rams. The former starter ran for 135 yards on 19 attempts with 1 TD. His longest was 39 yards, setting up a Redskins field goal. It’s his fourth career 100-yard game.
Redskins running back Tim Hightower ran the ball eight times for 24 yards and rookie Roy Helu provided relief by running the ball eight times for 35 yards. Shanahan known for sticking the guy that’s hot, started Torain for the second half and continued to let the ball handler make plays as he ran for a crucial first down with time winding down in the 4th quarter. All QB Rex Grossman had to do was take a few knees killing the clock and preserving the win for Washington.
It’s uncertain if Torain has replaced Hightower as the Redskins starter as they head into their bye week. Tune in for more as we approach the next game for the Redskins against the Eagles.
Notable: Washington is 3-1 for the first time since 2008. It’s his fourth career 100-yard game.
