Washington Redskins Troubles Continue

Problems continue for the Washington Redskins as the NFL has suspended three players for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.  Seattle Seahawks rookie guard John Moffitt been suspended for four games without pay for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances.  I can understand this one as a rookie tries to get every edge he can to match the performance level of the NFL, but the other two?

To add insult to injury, the other two players come from a battered and rebuilding Washington Redskins team. Four-game suspensions for tight end Fred Davis and left tackle Trent Williams were imposed until January 2^nd, the day after the final regular season game with NFC rival and fellow bottom dweller, the Philadelphia Eagles.  The two will be suspended without pay.

The sad part is, apparently the suspensions had been expected. “A person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press on Sunday that Davis and Williams were expecting to be penalized after failing multiple drug tests. The person spoke anonymously because of the confidential nature of the league’s drug testing policy.” (Redskins.com)

Failing multiple drug tests?  I guess these guys started self- medicating after the 6-game losing streak and realizing that the playoffs weren’t going to happen.  “Playoffs, Playoffs? We’re not going to the playoffs!”  And I thought people drank their troubles away?  Guys, you couldn’t wait until after the season was over to self-indulge?

It’s a shame because after a season ending injury to TE Chris Cooley, Davis has emerged as a serious threat on the field and is expected to give Cooley a run for his money during the off-season, to start next year.  As for Trent Williams, he is emerging as one of the league’s most sound lineman.

This is going to make waves inside the Washington Redskins front office and cause a lot of off-season friction if they don’t address this ASAP!
